First pregnancy update for the blog! I know I have been incredibly quiet on here lately. I’ve still been writing in my journal/ typing out some updates because it really does help with my anxiety to write, but I’ve been pretty absent on this platform.
Honestly, I’ve felt stuck lately in terms of blog content- we are cooking a ton of meals at home (aren’t we all!) but a lot of times by the time we eat I just don’t feel inspired anymore/ it’s late and I’m not taking pictures of my food. Then there is everything going on in the world with COVID, the (necessary) awakening for so many of us with the Black Lives Matter movement, politics, etc. that a lot of times I just don’t feel like I have anything useful to add. I’m doing a lot of learning, reading, and listening but not really feeling like I’m the person who should be sharing all of this, since I’m still learning as well.
Anyway, back to baby! I can’t believe we are over halfway there (I’m 23 weeks) and while at the beginning each week just dragged by, now that I am feeling the baby move more and I’ve had some very reassuring appointments, the weeks are moving much faster.
They say the first 12-13 weeks postpartum make up the “fourth trimester” as the baby is still very much an extension of mom while they adapt to the outside world. So much happens in these weeks in terms of change and development for both the baby and for mom.
It’s hard to sum up our experience in a neat little paragraph about what it’s been like to have a baby, so I’ll break it down into categories. This is more about my experience (versus how the baby has changed) and hopefully it resonates with others!
After over two months, I am finally writing Madelyn’s birth story! I wanted to write this because while I was pregnant I listened to/ read so many birth stories and they were incredibly helpful in allowing me to visualize what kind of birth I hoped to experience. For months prior to her birth, I listened to The Birth Hour podcast and The Birthful podcast, and I made sure I listened to all different types of births. I listened to C-section stories, un-medicated births, epidural births, homebirths, birth center births, etc. because I know that even if you “plan” for a particular type of birth, the baby might have their own ideas about how they want to come out and so I wanted to be prepared for any type of circumstance. I also didn’t want to feel any sort of disappointment no matter what type of birth I had. While my plan was to have an un-medicated birth, sometimes the baby has other ideas and I believe that all births are beautiful and happen the way they are intended. So let’s get to the story!
We are officially in the 9th month of pregnancy! It’s crazy to think that this little girl could come almost any day now. I think 39 weeks is considered “full term” though so I’m holding out for that, but I hope she doesn’t make us wait too long!
I often post photos on Instagram and tag them as “real food”, but I realize that this term can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Some people might say that all food is real food, but what I mean by this is that real food is food that is primarily unprocessed and does not include chemicals or additives. It’s very challenging to get these things 100% out of your diet, unless you make everything from scratch, but for the most part I make a concerted effort to remove these foods and choose others that are better alternatives.
